Types of shirts: 7 main groups

seven types of shirts

There are many types of shirts, like models, colours and matching. Anyway, if we gather them into 7 main groups, we can take into consideration all of them. Let’s see in detail the most important groups of shirts:

1.  Ceremonial shirts;
2.  Formal shirts;
3.  Informal shirts;
4.  Working shirts;
5.  Sport shirts;
6.  Military shirts;
7.  Ethnic shirts

Let’s discover something more about these kinds of shirts with a short description for each group!

  Ceremonial shirts: they can be shirts for tailcoats (with high and stiff collars) or tuxedos (with rigid collar with points folding inward, usually with gems buttons and cuffs with cuff links). They are often worn with black neckties. Their main colour is white or pearl grey.

 Formal shirts: a prestigious brand of clothing, represented by the white shirt that suits to every kind of garment and tie thanks to its chromatic neutrality. The one-colour striped shirts with white base and the famous Button Down shirts belong to the same shirt family, made of Oxford’s fabric.

 Informal shirts: informal shirts are for example short sleeve shirts (used in summer in your spare time) and tartan shirts (checked).

 Working shirts: this group of shirts is worn in different kinds of working situations, for example by mechanics, waiters or porters. Working shirts differ for the company logo, generally set in the right side of the shirt.

 Sport shirts: like working shirts, sport shirts are used for specific kinds of sports and are uniforms in all respects. They are often knitted for their wearing ease and comfort.

 Military shirts: military shirts are characterised by their colour (every shade of green), fabric (cotton) and the number of shoulder pads and accessory breast pockets.

 Ethnic shirts: typical of tropical countries, the shirts belonging to this seventh last group are nothing but long linen or light cotton shirts, that almost replace jackets during less warm periods.
