Measure a sweater or knitted garment that already fits the way you prefer, using centimetres throughout. Lay it flat without stretching the knit, then compare the same measurements consistently.
Prepare the knitwear
Use a flat surface and let the garment rest in its natural shape. Knitted fabrics can stretch easily, so the tape should touch the garment without pulling it.
Four useful measurements
1. Chest
Measure horizontally immediately below the armholes, from one side seam or edge to the other.
2. Lower width
Measure horizontally across the lower part of the garment, from one edge to the other, without stretching the ribbing.
3. Sleeve length
Extend the sleeve naturally and measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff, including the cuff.
4. Garment length
Measure vertically from the highest point below the neckline to the lower hem.
Knitted garments need a consistent method
Ribbing, stretch and yarn can make a sweater change shape when handled. Measure every garment in a relaxed state and avoid comparing a stretched measurement with a flat one.
Compare all four dimensions
Chest, lower width, sleeve and garment length in centimetres provide a more reliable comparison than the size label alone.
