What do shirts’ prices depend on?

Shirt quality and value

What determines the price of a men's shirt?

A shirt's price does not depend on one feature. Fabric, pattern development, construction, stitching, finishing, production and distribution all contribute to the final value of the garment.

Fabric matters, but it is not the only factor

Fibre quality, yarn regularity, weave, density, finishing and dyeing can make two cotton shirts feel and perform very differently. Poplin, Oxford, twill and other constructions also have different surfaces, weights and production requirements.

A high thread count or a prestigious fibre name does not guarantee a better shirt by itself. Construction and suitability for the intended use matter just as much.

Four factors that strongly influence value

Fabric

Fibre, yarn, weave, colour and finishing affect comfort, appearance and cost.

Construction

Pattern development, fit, reinforcements and assembly determine how the garment sits and moves.

Finishing

Stitching, buttons, buttonholes, collar and cuffs reveal the level of attention to detail.

Production

Automation, manual operations, production location and scale influence manufacturing costs.

Details worth checking before purchase

Stitching

Look for straight, regular seams without loose thread, especially at shoulders, armholes, sides, cuffs and collar.

Collar and cuffs

They should retain shape without feeling unnecessarily rigid. Internal construction should remain stable after correct care.

Buttons and buttonholes

Buttons should be secure and proportionate; buttonholes should be clean, compact and correctly sized.

Pattern matching and finishing

On checks and stripes, alignment at visible seams can indicate additional production time and precision.

Ready-to-wear, industrial production and handwork

Well-organised industrial production can offer excellent consistency and quality. More manual work, individual measurements or made-to-measure pattern adjustments generally require additional time and can increase the final price.

The appropriate choice depends on what the wearer needs rather than on the production method alone.

Does the brand affect the price?

A brand can include research, design, quality control, distribution, communication and service in its pricing. A recognised name does not automatically provide the best value for every customer, but consistency of fit, construction and support can be meaningful.

How to judge value for your own use

  • Choose a fabric appropriate to the season and frequency of wear.
  • Check that the fit allows movement without unnecessary excess fabric.
  • Inspect collar, cuffs, seams, buttons and buttonholes.
  • Consider care requirements and how often the shirt will be worn.
  • Compare the complete garment rather than one specification or label.

A more expensive shirt is not automatically the better choice

Value depends on how well the shirt meets your needs for fit, comfort, construction, care and frequency of use. The best choice combines useful characteristics with a level of quality that is coherent with the way you will wear it.
