Men's shirt colours: how to choose and combine them

White and light blue remain the easiest foundations for business and formalwear, while deeper or warmer colours broaden the wardrobe for business-casual, travel and evening outfits.

Reliable colours by occasion

White

The most versatile choice for suits, ties and formal occasions.

Light blue

Professional but softer than white, particularly useful with navy and grey tailoring.

Blue

More relaxed and visible, suitable for business-casual and evening combinations.

Pink and burgundy tones

Useful for adding controlled colour beneath navy, grey or brown jackets.

Green and brown

Natural with beige, olive, denim and textured autumn wardrobes.

Black

More contemporary than traditional businesswear and generally easier for evening looks.

Think about contrast

A light shirt under a darker jacket creates a clear formal hierarchy. Similar tones produce a softer effect. When the shirt is strongly coloured, neutral trousers and understated accessories usually keep the outfit balanced.

Solid colour or pattern?

Solid shirts are the easiest base for patterned ties and jackets. Checks and stripes add movement but need more control in the rest of the outfit. The pattern scale should be clearly different from any pattern used in the tie or tailoring.

Build a useful wardrobe, not just a colour collection

  • Start with the occasions you dress for most often.
  • Choose colours that work with the trousers and jackets you already own.
  • Use stronger colours as accents rather than making every element compete.
  • Consider season, fabric texture and light conditions.
