A tie should complete the shirt and jacket rather than compete with them. Colour, pattern scale, width, fabric and knot all contribute to a balanced result.
Choose the shirt and jacket first
Once the main garments are fixed, the tie can repeat one colour from the outfit or introduce a controlled contrast. With a patterned shirt, a solid tie is the simplest option.

Navy, burgundy, green, grey and patterned silk all work according to the suit.
Light-blue shirt
Navy and burgundy are classic; brown and green create a softer European business-casual palette.
Pink shirt

Striped or checked shirt
Use a solid tie or a pattern whose scale is clearly different from the shirt.
Width, lapels and body proportions
Tie width should relate to jacket lapels and the wearer's build. A very narrow tie can look disconnected from broad lapels, while a very wide tie can dominate a slim silhouette.
Choose the knot for the collar
Wider collars can accept a fuller knot; narrower openings usually work better with a compact knot. The knot should fill the available space without forcing the collar points apart.
