How to measure your neck for a men's shirt
European dress-shirt sizing commonly uses the collar measurement in centimetres. Taking the neck measurement correctly helps the collar close neatly without pressure or an excessive gap.
How to take the measurement
Position the tape
Place a soft tape around the base of the neck, where the shirt collar normally sits.
Keep it level
Keep the tape horizontal and in contact with the skin without tightening it.
Check comfort
Leave enough room to breathe and move naturally; a one-finger comfort check is a useful reference.
Centimetres first, inches as a secondary reference
Many European shirts are labelled directly by collar measurement in centimetres. Some international brands also show inches. One inch equals 2.54 centimetres, but brand conversions and fit blocks can differ.
| Collar | Approximate inches | General size reference |
|---|---|---|
| 37–38 cm | 14.5–15 in | S |
| 39–40 cm | 15.5–15.75 in | M |
| 41–42 cm | 16–16.5 in | L |
| 43–44 cm | 17–17.5 in | XL |
| 45–46 cm | 17.75–18 in | XXL |
These are broad references, not a substitute for the measurements given for the individual shirt.
You can also measure a shirt that fits well
Open the collar and lay it flat. Measure from the centre of the collar button to the centre of the opposite buttonhole. Compare that garment measurement with the method used in the product information.
Neck size is only one part of fit
A collar can fit correctly while the shoulders, chest, waist or sleeves do not. Check the complete silhouette before changing size only to gain more room at the neck.
Use measurements, then compare the shirt fit
