Pocket squares: fabrics, folds and how to combine them
A pocket square should complement the jacket, shirt and tie without copying them exactly. Fabric, colour, fold and the amount left visible determine whether the result feels formal, ceremonial or more relaxed.
Choose the fabric first
Silk
Fluid and luminous, ideal for softer folds and occasionwear.
Linen
Crisp and structured, particularly effective for a straight formal fold.
Cotton
Versatile and easy to use in business and smart-casual outfits.
Folds change the character
A straight fold is the most understated. One-point and multiple-point folds are more decorative, while the puff fold creates a softer silhouette that works well with silk.
Coordinate rather than match
Repeating one secondary colour is usually more refined than using an identical tie-and-pocket-square set. A burgundy tie, for example, can work with a white square edged in burgundy or a subtle pattern containing the same tone.
How much should be visible?
Keep the square clearly above the pocket edge without overfilling the breast pocket. Formal business dressing favours restraint; ceremonies and eveningwear allow a little more colour and volume.
