Ironing a shirt — Step 3: front and back
The larger body panels are easier once collar, shoulders, sleeves and cuffs are complete. Work one section at a time and keep side seams and the placket aligned.
Iron the front panels
Place one front panel flat on the board. Smooth the side seam and iron from the shoulder toward the hem. Work carefully around the buttons and placket, then repeat on the other front panel.
- Do not press directly on buttons.
- Keep the placket straight.
- Avoid pulling the fabric away from the side seam.
Iron the back
Turn the shirt and place the back flat. Smooth the fabric from the yoke downward, moving the shirt across the board as needed. Use one hand to guide the fabric without stretching it.
Pleats or darts should retain their intended construction. Do not flatten a designed fold into a different shape.
Final body check
Inspect the areas beside the placket, side seams and lower back. Correct any remaining fold with light steam or a controlled second pass when the fabric permits it.
Prepare the shirt for folding
Step 4 shows how to align and button the shirt before it is folded.
