Men's denim shirts: washes, fit and how to wear them
A denim shirt combines the familiar character of indigo with shirt construction. Wash, fabric weight, pockets and fit determine whether the result feels rugged, urban or suitable for a cleaner smart-casual outfit.
Light, medium and dark washes
Light wash
Relaxed and easy with beige, cream, olive and darker denim.
Medium wash
A versatile everyday option for chinos, contrasting jeans and casual jackets.
Dark wash
Cleaner and more controlled, particularly with lighter trousers and unstructured tailoring.
Faded wash
More visibly casual; keep the rest of the outfit simple so the fabric remains the main feature.
Denim and chambray are not identical
Denim commonly has a visible diagonal weave and can range from lightweight to substantial. Chambray often has a smoother, lighter construction. Always use the product composition and fabric description as the final reference.
How to combine a denim shirt
- With chinos: beige, olive, navy and stone create simple contrast.
- With jeans: keep a clear difference between the shirt and trouser wash.
- With knitwear: use a clean collar and avoid excessive bulk.
- With an unstructured jacket: darker, more uniform denim looks the most controlled.
Choose fit according to fabric weight
Heavier denim needs enough room through the shoulders and chest to move comfortably. Lighter fabrics can sit closer to the body. If the shirt will be worn open over a T-shirt, allow for the extra layer.
