Measure a shirt you already own and like the fit of, then compare those garment measurements with the size information for the shirt you are considering. Keep the tape straight and do not stretch the fabric.
Prepare the shirt
Use a flexible tape measure and a flat surface. Button the shirt where indicated, smooth the fabric and take every measurement in the same way so the numbers remain comparable.
Garment measurements are not the same as body measurements. Compare shirt measurements with shirt measurements unless a guide explicitly asks for a body measurement.
Five useful measurements
1. Collar
Open the collar completely and lay it flat. Measure along the collar band from the centre of the button to the centre of the opposite buttonhole.
2. Chest
Button and flatten the shirt. Measure horizontally from one underarm seam to the other immediately below the armholes.
3. Waist
Keep the shirt buttoned and measure its width horizontally around the waist area, using the same position on every comparison shirt.
4. Sleeve length
Extend the sleeve and measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff, including the cuff in the measurement.
5. Shirt length
Turn the shirt over and measure vertically from the centre seam below the collar to the lowest point of the back hem.
Use the measurements together
One matching number is not enough. Collar, chest, waist, sleeve and length should form a coherent overall result. When two sizes are close, the intended fit can determine which silhouette is more suitable.
