Ironing a shirt — Step 5: fold it evenly
Symmetrical side folds help the shirt fit neatly on a shelf or in a suitcase. Smooth every section before completing the next fold.
Fold the first side
Hold one shoulder and the corresponding lower edge, smooth the fabric and fold the side toward the centre. Position the sleeve along the folded body without creating a bulky diagonal section.
Repeat on the other side
Use the first fold as the reference for width and shoulder position. Fold the second side and sleeve in the same way, then check that the shirt forms an even rectangle.
Symmetry matters more than a fixed width. Different shirt sizes and collar constructions require slightly different proportions.
Fold the lower section upward
Bring the hem upward in two or three sections according to the available shelf or suitcase depth. Keep the final fold below the collar so that the collar is not crushed.
- Smooth the fabric before every fold.
- Keep both sleeves contained within the shirt body.
- Avoid placing a thick fold directly behind the collar.
- Do not compress the shirt while it is still warm from ironing.
Finish and store the folded shirt
Step 6 covers the final light pass and the correct way to place the shirt in storage.
