Shirt buttons: materials, stitching and quality details
Buttons are small components but highly visible ones. Material, thickness, finish and stitching should suit the fabric and intended formality of the shirt.
Common button materials
Mother-of-pearl
Natural reflections and small variations create an individual, refined appearance.
Polyester and resin
Reliable materials that allow consistent shapes, colours and finishes.
Corozo
A plant-based material that can be polished and dyed while retaining a natural character.
Wood, coconut or metal
More distinctive materials usually associated with casual or strongly styled shirts.
Two holes or four holes?
The number of holes does not define quality on its own. What matters is whether the button is secure, proportionate to the buttonhole and attached without distorting the surrounding fabric.
What to check
- Secure stitching without loose thread.
- A button that passes through the buttonhole without excessive force.
- Thickness appropriate to the fabric and placket.
- Colour and finish coherent with the shirt.
- Consistent spacing along the front.
Replacement and care
Keep any spare button supplied with the shirt. When replacing one, match diameter, thickness, colour and material as closely as possible. If an exact match is unavailable, replacing a complete visible set can produce a more uniform result.
